The Verkada cloud-based product suite starts with safety and extends to operations.
Our founders are builders. All of them are trained engineers. They love creating new products to solve big problems. Over a decade ago, two of our founders experienced the challenges with the “best” enterprise video security products available at that time. Existing hardware-based systems cost a lot of money and were insecure and clunky. The market lagged behind the progress seen in the consumer space, where someone could buy high-end cameras with cloud-based software to protect their home.
Over the next few years, they started from first principles to see if they could find a better solution to help organizations more effectively protect their people and property using a software-first approach. They spent time with industry leaders and prospective customers to fully understand their challenges and concerns. The more conversations they had, the more they grasped the stress and anxiety faced by the people entrusted with keeping organizations safe. They envisioned new products they could build to ensure these individuals always had the most critical information at their fingertips.
As the challenge became clear, so did their goal: to positively impact the world by making organizations of any size safer using truly innovative technology. In the summer of 2016, Verkada was born.
Filip Kaliszan is the chief executive officer and co-founder of Verkada. Since its founding in 2016, Filip has spearheaded the organization’s growth and product development.
A builder at heart, Filip created CourseRank, his first startup, alongside two of Verkada’s other co-founders, James Ren and Benjamin Bercovitz, as a sophomore at Stanford. Filip and his partners sold CourseRank to Chegg.com in less than four years. After the acquisition, Filip spent four years as a Director of Product Management at Chegg.
Filip holds both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University.
Hans Robertson is executive chairman and co-founder of Verkada. Today Hans, together with Filip, runs the day-to-day business at Verkada.
Before Verkada, Hans co-founded and served as the chief operating officer of Meraki for almost ten years. During this time, he helped design the first cloud-managed enterprise networking products – including Wi-Fi, firewall and switching systems – and led the company to a $1.2 billion acquisition with Cisco in 2012. Hans launched his career at McKinsey & Company and also served as a leader at EMC and VMware.
In addition to his legacy of co-founding two industry-disrupting Unicorns, Hans is an active investor in the startup ecosystem. Hans has successfully invested in over 20 startups, many of which have been acquired by Facebook, Google and Microsoft.
Hans holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He resides in the Bay Area with his wife, a professor of medicine, and their two children. Outside of his work, he is an avid skier and kiteboarder.
James Ren is a co-founder and software architect at Verkada. Before Verkada, James launched CourseRank with Verkada co-founders Filip Kaliszan and Benjamin Bercovitz while he was a student at Stanford. James has also worked as a software engineer at Google and then at Chegg after CourseRank was acquired.
James holds a bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from Stanford University and a juris doctorate from Harvard Law School.
Outside of work, James enjoys cooking and photographing his travels.
Benjamin Bercovitz is a co-founder of Verkada. Prior to founding Verkada, Benjamin founded CourseRank alongside Filip Kaliszan and James Ren. Benjamin served as the chief technology officer for CourseRank, leading engineering efforts before the company was acquired by Chegg. At Chegg he served as a principal engineer, transforming their backend systems during a period of high growth and expansion leading up to their eventual IPO.
Benjamin earned his bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science from Stanford University.
Outside of work, Benjamin enjoys nature and travel.
